Keeping Your Brick Pavers Looking Their Best

Oct 15, 2022

Interlocking brick pavers are one of the most popular hardscaping choices here in Florida. You'll see them used for driveways, sidewalks, patios, pool decks, and just about anywhere else that isn't covered in greenery. In fact, you probably have some in your own yard!

3 Tips for Maintaining Your Brick Pavers

You may have them but do you know how to keep them? Looking their best, that is! Brick pavers need regular maintenance to keep their lasting good looks. Here are three essential maintenance steps that will help ensure that you'll be enjoying your brick pavers for years to come.

  1. Sealing your pavers (and resealing them every 2 or 3 years) will make them stain and mildew resistant and also keep them from deteriorating in Florida's abundant rain. It will also help prevent efflorescence, that unsightly powdery white, yellow, green, or brown substance that 'blooms' on unsealed brick pavers.
  2. Keep a good outdoor broom handy, because sweeping your pavers regularly will clear away organic debris like algae, lichens, and moss. Not only are these unwelcome growths slippery, but they can stain your carefully chosen pavers and even contribute to their breakdown.
  3. Keep your pavers clean to avoid stains from spilled drinks, dropped food, and other evidence of a life well lived. It's better to spot clean stains versus attacking them with a pressure washer. Unlike your garden hose, a pressure washer can uproot your pavers unless you're an expert with it. It isn't called a pressure washer for nothing!

Improperly sealed pavers will need chemical stripping before they can be sealed properly. That's why it's always best to have the job done by experienced paver sealing professionals the first time around. And don't forget to have your travertine and concrete pavers sealed, too!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How often should I seal my brick pavers?

For best results, you should reseal your brick pavers every 2-3 years. Depending on the traffic and weather conditions in your area, you may need to reapply more or less frequently. If water doesn’t bead up on the surface of your bricks when you spray them with water, it’s time to reseal.

  • How soon after my pavers are sealed can I drive on them?

The paver surface can be opened to vehicular traffic 48 hours after cleaning and sealing is complete. To prevent tire markings, do not make any tight turns or sudden stops.

  • What should I do with my car on the day my pavers are being sealed?

Make sure all automobiles that will need to be used are out of the garage and not on the paver area that is to be cleaned and sealed. If you are not home the day of cleaning and sealing and if garage doors close on the pavers, make arrangements with your sealing technician to be sure that garage doors will be left open. The paver surface can be opened to foot traffic 4 hours after cleaning and sealing is completed.

  • What kind of sealant do you use?

We exclusively use Ure-seal sealers because we believe they’re the best in the state. Their product is twice as thick as the closest competitor and worth every penny. We find it to last longer, as it is a very resilient material to weather where other brands fall short. We are not loyal to a brand- we're loyal to our customers. So, we found the best sealer out there and we stuck with it!
